In this episode of "Conversation with the Author," journalist Katy Navarro talks with writer and journalist Luize Valente. She is also a documentary filmmaker and has published award-winning historical novels and documentaries. She has published the books *The Secret of the Oratory*, *A Square in Antwerp*, and *Sonata in Auschwitz*. Luize is now launching her novel *The Olive Tree Confraternity*. In the program, Luize Valente explains the book's creation process, the construction of the characters, the intense research, and its connection to her own life story. The novel goes back to the past. She talks a little about the book and explains that on the day she turns fifty, the character Branca receives unexpected news: she has inherited an olive tree in Santarém, Portugal, from an unknown relative. The inheritance is the starting point of the novel, which narrates the lives of two women separated by four centuries and united by a family secret. A story that begins in Rio de Janeiro in 2018 and goes back to 16th-century Portugal. Parallel to the revelation of her inheritance, Branca experiences a moment of professional and personal burnout, trapped in a deteriorating relationship amidst subtle conflicts and power struggles. A disagreement over cutting a tree branch is the trigger for Branca to end her marriage, resign from her job, and travel to Portugal in search of the unusual inheritance. In the 16th century, her ancestor, also named Branca, is denounced to the Holy Office after a domestic conflict, also motivated by cutting a tree branch, which changes the course of her life. Two journeys in search of freedom and identity in a story that spans generations marked by migrations, interrupted loves, and buried secrets. With a structure that alternates between past and present, The Olive Tree Confraternity is a novel about belonging and transmission, about the marks we inherit and those we ultimately decide to plant.
