Route Overview: Kinryuji South Parking Lot → Trailhead → Fork → Fork → Naka-Hachiojiyama → O-Hachiojiyama → Fork → Oshirobashi Bridge → Fork → Fork → Kanayama (Nita Shrine) → Fork → Rest Area → Fork → Fork → Lookout → Fork → Kanayama Observatory → Fork → Fork (Arbour) → Fork → Kinryuji → A loop around Kinryuji South Parking Lot. Duration: Approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes (including an approximately 10-minute break) Journey Details: The journey begins at Kinryuji South Parking Lot (municipal parking lot) in late autumn. From here, take your first steps into Kanayama, a place where history and nature intertwine. The winding staircases that begin the hike will have you breathing heavily. Looking up, the yellow leaves sparkle in the sunlight, and soft light pours through the branches. The beautiful late autumn scenery makes you smile and your steps feel lighter. After passing the saddle, you reach a fork in the road. If you go straight, you'll climb Mt. Hachioji, but if you go right, you'll take a detour. Here, I choose to pass Mt. Hachioji and follow the ridgeline. I cross a peak with no views, then descend again and meet up with the detour. Soon after the junction, the beautiful arch of Gojo Bridge comes into view. The contrast between the stone bridge and the vibrant autumn leaves is like a painting. Continuing along the road, I come across Prefectural Route 321. Following the road closely, I turn right at a gazebo and head back up the mountain. The path continues on a somewhat steep, rocky slope, and the path branches off, making it difficult to tell where to go, but as long as you keep heading higher, you'll be fine. Stone monuments and information boards scattered around the area convey vestiges of the castle's past, quietly conveying the depth of history carved into this mountain. Climbing the winding path, I reach the steps in front of the torii gate. From the fork just before the peak, I head for the summit first. My feet are drawn by the fiery autumn leaves as I make my way forward, arriving at Nitta Shrine, enshrined at the summit of Kanayama. After paying my respects, I emerge into a wide-open observation deck to the east. The cityscapes of Ashikaga and Ota spread out below, and the Kanto Plain stretches out beyond. It's a magnificent view that makes you want to take a deep breath. Returning to the fork just before the peak, I head to the rest area via the gently circling Hinoike Pond. I gaze down on the cityscape for a while. On clear days, I'm told I can even see Mount Fuji, but today it's shrouded in mist. That, too, is part of the charm of the journey. Stepping down one level and passing through the main gate, I arrive at Tsukinoike Pond. Vibrant colored carp gracefully swim across the tranquil waters. Continuing southwest, you'll reach the lookout point. Time passes slowly as you enjoy sweeping views of Mount Akagi, Mount Kesamaru, and the Nikko Mountain Range. Go down another level to the Kanayama Observatory. The view here is also exceptional. Descending via the remains of Mitsuke Demaru, we slowly descend, careful of the accumulated leaves. From a gentle ridge trail fork, we head toward Kinryu-ji Temple, eventually emerging next to the main hall. This completes a comfortable loop. While not flashy, this day in Kanayama allows you to carefully savor the autumn foliage, history, and views. It was a high-quality mountain climbing trip in a satoyama that will remain in your memory, even for adults.
