We stayed at Ryokan Daikokuya, a member inn of the Japan Association for Secluded Hot Springs. The inn is located deep in the mountains at the headwaters of the Abukuma River in Nishigo-mura, Nishishirakawa-gun, Fukushima Prefecture. 110 steps lead down to the mountain stream, where there is a large rock bath for mixed bathing. Bathing suits and bath towels are not allowed, but there are women-only hours, so even those who don't like mixed bathing can rest assured. For those who don't feel like going down the stairs, there is a separate “Ebisu-no-yu” bath for men and women, which also has an open-air bath. Both baths are made of natural spring water, so you can enjoy the fresh hot water.
