Master Plan: Eco friendly home for retirees
Despite several building hindrances, such as the block of land being west-facing and power lines running across the property, this Victorian country home is a beautiful example of what modern country living can look like. And, it’s proof you can build a home that works for your needs. This Fish Creek home was designed by Melbourne architecture firm Edition Office, to meet the needs of two retirees. The house needed to meet several requirements; to be environmentally low-impact, to be accessible to its aging residents, and to be able to house their children and grandchildren. The result is a modern, sleek home in the heart of Victoria’s Gippsland region. The house features three self-sufficient modules, all connected, that can house the large family of the residents. And, when it’s just the owners in the house, they can live in only one module. The house is also built with several features to make aging life easier — drawers on the outside of the building that connect to the inside, in which firewood can be placed to make transporting it less laborious, and just one level. Plus, the modern country home features a unique brick wall running along one side, which according to the architects, was a happy accident. “The colour of the mortar mixed with the recycled brick gave the wall a very unique appearance, both monolithic and earthen”, says architect Aaron Roberts, explaining why they chose to leave the wall unpainted.
