An Architect’s Own Off-Grid House That Blends Into the Rural Australian Landscape

Set amongst the sweeping hills of Victoria's Macedon Ranges, Hill Plains House by Wolveridge Architects is an off-grid home designed by architect Jerry Wolveridge for his own family. Drawing on the simple, utilitarian language of Australian agricultural sheds, the home combines robust, raw materials with carefully framed views of the surrounding landscape. The long, narrow plan is arranged to optimise cross ventilation and passive solar gain, with north-facing living spaces, generous picture windows and concealed thermal mass. A wood-fire boiler heats the home through radiator panels, while photovoltaic panels, battery storage and rainwater tanks allow the house to operate entirely off-grid. Inside, materials such as blackbutt cladding, exposed steel and recycled timber create a restrained, earthy palette. Designed as both a home and an experiment in sustainable rural living, Hill Plains House demonstrates how simple, honest materials and efficient planning can create a beautiful, resilient home, one that feels deeply connected to both land and climate.
