They began talking and as the night progressed the man said he was looking to hire someone proficient in weapons with a military background. The pay was high but the job was in Iceland. The man laid out a large amount of money on the table with much more promised after he arrived at their village. Newcomb agreed and the man handed him a piece of paper with detailed instructions and a hand drawn map. After 7 weeks of traveling then another long horse ride he came to the village but what he discovered was anything but what he was expecting. Sometime later he made it back to New York and went straight to The New York Tribune headquarters where he sat down with editor Horace Greeley, telling him the horrifying events that took place. Greeley titled it, “The Disturbing Events of Newcomb Clark.” What Newcomb told him was never published. His story has been transcribed from the original document into modern day English.
