On August 15, 1967, a stranger walked into a small white farmhouse near Shell Lake, Saskatchewan, and killed nine members of the Peterson family. Only a four-year-old girl survived. It remains one of the worst random mass killings in Canadian history — but the more disturbing story is what happened before that night. Victor Hoffman was 21. He had been diagnosed with serious mental illness and treated at the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford. Roughly three weeks before the murders, he was discharged.
