Lanying Grand Canyon Hanging Wall Highway, located in China’s Lanying Grand Canyon Scenic Area — known as "Asia’s Deepest Valley" — is a well-known tourist attraction in the scenic area and hailed as "China’s Most Beautiful Cliff Road". The cliff road clings to the east cliff of the canyon, winding and narrow, with a total length of 1,200 meters and a width of less than 3 meters. Also known as Lanying Sky Road, the Lanying Grand Canyon Hanging Wall Highway is a vital lifeline for the villagers of Zhoujiaba (a small local village). Surrounded by steep mountains and crisscrossing gullies, the local villagers have long made their living by relying on the mountains. A small village with more than 50 households has formed in Zhoujiaping, which is located on the upper side of the canyon at an altitude of over 1,000 meters above sea level. However, due to the barrier of the canyon cliffs, it was extremely difficult to build roads connecting to the outside world. For a long time, the villagers could only climb the 1,000-meter-high cliff walls to visit relatives, go to school and seek medical treatment, making travel extremely inconvenient. Most villagers chose to relocate to live with relatives and friends, leaving only 23 households with 83 people before the construction of the Hanging Wall Highway. To change this predicament of poverty and backwardness, on the night of the first lunar month in 2001, the then village party branch secretary organized a bonfire courtyard meeting and boldly proposed the idea of raising funds to dig a road through the cliff — a proposal supported by all villagers. This marked the beginning of the construction of the Hanging Wall Sky Road. The villagers raised funds, donated labor, and worked together day and night, men, women and children alike. Using traditional steel drills and hammers, and adopting the ancient methods of carrying materials on their shoulders and backs, they chiseled inch by inch, hammer by hammer. It took 4 years and 3 months to carve the world-shaking "Hanging Wall Highway" into the cliffs with a vertical height difference of over 1,000 meters. This ended the history of villagers climbing cliffs to enter and leave the village, and created the road-construction spirit of "cutting through mountains to build roads and fighting against heaven and earth". The touching story behind the road construction has been featured on CCTV many times, quickly making it an "Internet-famous road" that attracts numerous tourists to visit and check in. It is also praised by tourists as "the Road to Prosperity on the Cliff". To visit the Hanging Wall Highway, start from Wuxi County, Chongqing, take Wushen Road (from Wuxi to Shennongjia) to the Tongchengchang Town Branch Road, turn right towards Lanying Grand Canyon Scenic Area, and drive to the canyon’s panoramic viewing spot to reach the Lanying Hanging Wall Highway. On the opposite side of the Sky Road stands Yintiaoling, the highest peak of the Daba Mountain Range with an altitude of 2,796.8 meters, which is now a national nature reserve. Below the highway lies Lanying Grand Canyon — "Asia’s Deepest Valley" with a drop of over 1,000 meters. Standing on the Hanging Wall Highway and looking down, you can see the Lanying Grand Canyon, famous for its perilous peaks, strange mountains, exotic rocks, clear waters, secluded caves, rare birds and exotic beasts.
