High School Horrors in a Nancy Drew Game - Warnings at Waverly Academy (2009)
Join me as I continue my exploration of the beloved Nancy Drew game series with one of the most iconic entries. Warnings at Waverly Academy is a mystery computer game with some gothic horror touches from 2009 developed by HeR Interactive in which famous girl sleuth Nancy Drew heads goes undercover at a prestige prep school for girls that is being haunted by an anonymous figure called the Black Cat that's been targeting valedictorian candidates. We get embroiled into a sinister world of gossip, secret societies, ghostly presences, and a mystery surrounding one of history's most notorious gothic writers Edgar Allan Poe. Can we discover the identity of the Black Cat and stop them before the next student falls into their clutches? This video is an unpacking of this unique game's story, themes, atmosphere, and inspirations, the latter of which we go into special detail near the end. We take a deep look into the works of Edgar Allan Poe, who features prominently in the story, as well as the original Nancy Drew book that inspired the game. And of course, into what makes this games network of lies, secrets, and gossip among the prep school students so compelling and powerful even today. The music used in this video is from the OST for Nancy Drew: Warnings at Waverly Academy by SomaTone Interactive Audio, the OST for Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor by Kevin Manthei, and the OST for The Last Door by Carlos Viola. The outro music is 400 Meters by Chinese Football. Please show the composers some love!
