Barrow Hill (2006) - Britain’s Forgotten Folk Horror Game Masterpiece
Join me as I explore a classic point-and-click adventure horror game that does not get the recognition today that it deserves: Barrow Hill: Curse of the Ancient Circle from 2006. Developed by English game dev Matt Clark through his company Shadow Tor, in this equal parts eerie and nostalgic game we become trapped in the mysterious town of Barrow Hill in Cornwall. We learn about the shadowy ancient stone circle in the town as well as the abandoned recent excavation into the site. In Barrow Hill, we discover much more than we bargained for: ancient entities, vanishings, pagan rites, and forgotten horrors. Can we withstand the atmospheric terror of Barrow Hill, stop the haunting, and escape? Or will we become another victim of the stone circle and their ancient power? This video is an unpacking of this unique and underrated game's story, themes, atmosphere, and inspiration, the latter of which we go into specific detail near the end. We take a look at the stories and traditions that inspired this game, namely some British sci-fi and horror series from the 1970s as well as horror stories from forgotten authors. This video touring the Duloe Stone Circle with Matt Clark was really useful and interesting: • The Real Barrow Hill – Duloe Stone Circle ... The music used in this video is from the OST for The Last Door (Seasons 1 and 2) by Carlos Viola, the OST for Barrow Hill by Jan Kavan, the OST for Curse of Blackmoor Manor by Kevin Manthei and the OST for Scratches by Cellar of Rats. The outro music is Corvus Cornix by Svrm. Please show the composers some love! Feel free to suggest future video ideas in the comments! Or via email: [email protected]
