Séfarades ? Judéo-arabe ? Juifs-Arabes ?

A discussion about issue #6 of the magazine "Daï!": "Sephardic" With the participation of Yaël Dwek-Zeitoun, Sophie Goldblum, Alexandre Journo, and Jonas Sibony Moderated by Jonathan Hayoun 0:00 Introduction 5:14 What is Judeo-Arabic?, by Jonas Sibony 30:45 Marranos: The Eternal Return, by Sophie Goldblum 52:44 "Jewish-Arabs"? A conversation with Yaël Dwek-Zeitoun and Alexandre Journo While strictly speaking it refers to the descendants of the Jews who lived in the Iberian Peninsula before the expulsion of 1492, the term "Sephardic" is used more broadly to designate all Jews originating from the Arab world. Despite the persistence of Judeo-Spanish in some areas (particularly in northern Morocco), the majority of their inhabitants spoke Judeo-Arabic, a collection of dialects into which linguist Jonas Sibony offers a fascinating exploration. A segment of their descendants now claims a new identity, under the politically charged label of "Arab Jews," a term whose relevance is questioned by Yaël Dwek-Zeitoun and Alexandre Journo. Sophie Goldblum, for her part, examines the ambivalent figure of the Marrano, embodying both the concealment and atrophy of Jewishness, and its resilience throughout the centuries.
