How to Do a Dégagé (Jeté) in Ballet | Build Strength & Clarity in Your Movement
Let’s take the next step forward in your ballet training with battement dégagé (also called battement jeté) a foundational barre exercise that builds speed, precision, and articulation in the legs and feet. In this video, we’ll focus on executing dégagés to the side (à la seconde) from 1st position, while facing the barre. I’ll guide you through how to stand in your legs and feet, how to transfer your weight properly, and how that shift allows you to free one leg for movement without compromising your alignment. While it may look like just a quick brush of the foot, dégagés are packed with technique and intention. I’ll help you understand the deeper how and why so you can move with both strength and ease. We'll cover: 💙 How to stand and transfer your weight to prepare for a dégagé 💙 How to do a battement dégagé to second from first position 💙 How to switch legs during an exercise with thoughtful weight shifts 💙 Why following the correct floor pathway of the foot matters 💙 What to avoid (like lifting the hip!) for clean and aligned technique 💙 A final visual showing proper placement of the foot in 2nd position When done with intention, the dégagé builds toward everything from crisp petit allegro to elegant adagio lines. Let’s build those habits from the ground up! 🔹 Subscribe for more adult ballet tutorials, breakdowns, and encouragement! 🔹 I’d love to hear from you!
