Site 6E | SOI Divestream 955 - Part 2
This 11-hour dive at Site 6E will focus on bubble streams detected on a mound (mud volcano?) during mapping on this expedition, but which have not been visually confirmed. These bubble streams may represent unknown and unexplored seeps. Additionally, there were contrasting areas of very dark and bright backscatter detected here, indicating a depression and hard substrate, respectively. Specifically, the dive will begin on the flat sedimented seafloor, then climb onto the mound, passing through several bubble targets on the local high. The summit will continue to be explored, as well as a depression feature to the north of the mound, before progressing to smaller mounds. The dive priority is not to complete the waypoints, but instead to search for seepage/fluid flow/bubbles and/or high-density animal communities, including seep communities and coral-sponge gardens. The dive will undertake scientific exploration, measurements with the temperature probe and heat flow probe, video transects, as well as biological sampling. All six Niskins will need to be fired simultaneously during the dive.
