23 January 1556. In six minutes, 830,000 people perished beneath collapsed cave dwellings in the Wei River valley — and this remains the deadliest earthquake in the recorded history of humanity. The magnitude was not a record — around 8 by modern estimates. That is roughly 800 times weaker than the Great Chilean Earthquake of 1960 and substantially weaker than Japan's Tōhoku event of 2011. And yet the death toll here was 40 times higher.
