Why Your Best Love Still Leaves Them Empty | John 13

You pour your best love into the people closest to you. So why do they still feel empty? Pastor Daniel Mosley opens John 13 with a question he cannot shake: am I actually good at loving the people closest to me? Not everybody, but the few you would take a bullet for. You can pour yourself out on your own terms and still leave the people you love running on empty. So who even gets to say what love is, you, them, or someone who already showed you? Here is the hard answer. You don't get to define love. He already did. Jesus answers it on the floor. Hours before the cross, the King who holds all authority in heaven takes off his robe, wraps a towel around his waist, and washes his disciples' feet, including the feet of Judas, the man about to betray him. He loved them to the end. Then he hands us a new command that upgrades the old one, from "love your neighbor as yourself" to "love one another as I have loved you." Call it the platinum rule. And the order is fixed. You cannot pour out a love you have never let yourself receive, so you get washed before you wash. First you sit still and let Jesus love you, the love you did not earn and cannot repay. Then you carry his towel to the one person closest to you and love them the way he loved you: the first move, the low place, the costly thing, whether or not it ever comes back.
