Philipp divides homeowners into three groups based on the amortization period of their potential solar system. The red zone includes systems with an amortization period of over 17 years. Philipp advises against this if the primary motivation is financial. This usually applies to roofs in permanent shade or areas suitable for fewer than eight modules. In the yellow zone, with a payback period of 13 to 17 years, your motivations are key. Those primarily seeking independence or climate protection can invest deliberately, but shouldn't expect high returns. The green zone is reached by households with an annual consumption of at least 3,500 kilowatt-hours and space for twelve or more modules. Here, the amortization period is usually less than ten years, regardless of roof orientation. The calculation becomes particularly attractive with an electric car or heat pump, which significantly increase self-consumption. Self-consumption is what makes photovoltaic systems profitable, not feeding electricity into the grid. Electricity from your own roof costs approximately 5 to 10 cents per kilowatt-hour in the long term, while grid electricity costs between 25 and 40 cents.
