If you have or are planning to install a heat pump, a photovoltaic system can quickly save you several hundred euros annually. Philipp shows you which mistakes to make when buying one can really cost you money and why expensive controllers are usually unnecessary. Chapters in this video 0:00 Is PV worthwhile for heat pumps? 0:21 Expensive controllers often unnecessary 1:40 How the system works together 2:29 Why smart controls offer little benefit 4:41 Free hot water trick 5:21 Proper system planning is crucial 6:11 Rule of thumb: Gas divided by 3, oil times 3 8:09 Optimizing orientation for winter electricity 9:59 Free quote check with Philipp 10:22 Setting realistic expectations 12:18 Savings tip: Switching electricity tariffs This video is about: A heat pump is usually the biggest electricity consumer in a house and can achieve significant savings with a photovoltaic system. Philipp explains, based on over 500 verified cases, how the combination of a PV system and a heat pump really works and which pitfalls you should avoid. The most common expensive mistake is unnecessary controllers, which large providers like to sell for over €1000 extra. The interplay works even without additional technology: About a third of the heat pump's electricity comes automatically directly from the roof when the sun is shining. The battery storage shifts additional solar power from midday to the evening hours. Proper sizing of the solar system is particularly important. You can estimate your future heat pump electricity consumption with a simple rule of thumb: gas consumption divided by 3, oil consumption multiplied by 3. For 1,500 liters of heating oil, this results in an annual electricity requirement of approximately 4,500 kilowatt-hours. Those who plan the system based solely on old electricity bills will undersize it from the outset. The orientation also plays a crucial role. A south-facing orientation is optimal, as the low winter sun favors steeply angled modules – precisely when the heat pump needs electricity most. East-west facing systems still achieve 80-85 percent of the yields of south-facing systems, often with better self-consumption. Realistically, you can cover 30-50 percent of the heat pump's electricity needs over the course of the year with your own PV system.
