Harmaji, Coordinator of Trenggalek History Activists (Pesat), made this assumption after he and a team from the Trenggalek Tourism and Culture Office (Disparbud) completed initial identification at the site on Monday (June 15, 2026). According to Harmaji, the physical form and construction techniques of the structure visible at the site actually point to it being part of an ancient water management system. "Our preliminary assumption is that this site is part of an ancient irrigation system. However, the team of experts still needs to conduct further research to determine its exact function," said Harmaji. He explained that the arrangement of large red bricks at the base of the spring has characteristics that differ from those of monumental religious buildings. Instead, the visible construction pattern suggests the characteristics of a water channel, a control tank, or part of a past clean water distribution system. "The archaeological team will need to prove through scientific studies whether this structure functioned as a water channel, control tank, or other component in a past hydraulic system," he explained. Discovers Man-Made Underground Tunnel While residents and officials were draining the spring using a pump, the field team discovered an additional structure resembling a small man-made tunnel or tunnel for channeling underground water. This finding further strengthens the suspicion that the past community used the area as a water resource management center. "We found a small tunnel connected to the main water channel. This finding indicates an integrated reservoir system connecting several spring sources," explained Harmaji. He believes the connection between these water reservoirs is an important indicator of the past community's ability to manage water resources in a planned manner. However, Harmaji cautioned the public against jumping to conclusions. He emphasized that all current findings are still only preliminary hypotheses. "We have only completed the initial identification stage. The Cultural Preservation Center (BPK) still has the authority to research and determine the function and age of this structure," he emphasized. Unveiling Hydraulic Technology from the Kediri Kingdom Era The existence of this ancient brick structure immediately attracted public attention because it is located in Kamulan Village, an area of ​​historical significance for Trenggalek. Previously, researchers discovered the Kamulan Inscription in the same village. This inscription, dated 1194 AD, remains the basis for determining Trenggalek Regency's Anniversary. If further research reveals a connection between this structure and other nearby archaeological sites, the findings at Sendang Kamulyan have the potential to unlock new insights into how people during the Kediri Kingdom built settlements and managed advanced irrigation systems for their time.
