We Thought We'd Love Ushuaia, Argentina. Then We Got There.
Could Ushuaia, Argentina be a good place to retire, slow travel, or spend part of the year? In this video, we explore the world's southernmost city and evaluate its weather, cost of living, walkability, infrastructure, and day-to-day livability. We expected to love Ushuaia's cool summer temperatures and stunning scenery—but after spending time here, we discovered several surprises that changed our perspective. Ushuaia intrigued us as a potential retirement and slow-travel destination. Known as the "End of the World," it offers dramatic mountain scenery, access to Tierra del Fuego National Park, long summer daylight hours, a unique location at the southern tip of South America - and a way to avoid heat and humidity, even in the heart of South America's summer season. But what is it actually like to spend time here? Even though we originally added Ushuaia to our itinerary primarily as an escape from the heat of the South American summer, there was a lot more to Ushuaia and its potential than we anticipated. But some of that potential also came at some surprising costs - literally and figuratively. In this video, we share our impressions after exploring Ushuaia and discuss: ✓ Weather and wind conditions ✓ Cost of living compared to Buenos Aires ✓ Walkability and terrain ✓ Grocery stores, restaurants, and daily life ✓ Transportation and getting around town ✓ Tierra del Fuego National Park on your own ✓ Housing and neighborhood observations ✓ Whether Ushuaia could realistically work as a retirement or long-term travel base We also share one of the biggest surprises from our visit—something we hadn't fully appreciated until we arrived. If you're researching retirement abroad, slow travel destinations, digital nomad locations, or simply planning a trip to Patagonia, we hope this video helps you decide whether Ushuaia belongs on your list.
