Montevideo Passed (Most of) Our Tests… But Still Didn’t Make the Cut

Montevideo, Uruguay passed almost all of our tests — but in the end, it still didn’t make the cut as a future rotating home base. In this video, we score Montevideo across our full evaluation framework to determine whether it could work as one of our three-month rotating home bases. While Montevideo impressed us in many areas — including safety, food culture, healthcare, and walkability — a few key factors ultimately kept it from becoming a place we’d return to for three months year after year. This video is the follow-up to our preliminary impressions, where we explored Montevideo’s neighborhoods, cost of living, and overall vibe. After reviewing feedback and taking a closer look, we share our final scores and explain our decision. In this video, we cover: • Weather (Pass/Fail) • Safety (Pass/Fail) • Healthcare (Pass/Fail) • Cost of Living (Pass/Fail) • Walkability & Transportation • Food Culture • Housing Options • Visa & Residency • Overall Vibe Montevideo is widely considered one of the safest and most livable cities in Latin America — and we found a lot to like. But as we continue searching for our three rotating home bases around the world, we're looking for places we'd want to return to year after year for extended stays. This video shares our personal experience and perspective after spending a week in Montevideo. Your experience may be very different — and we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. And even our experience would likely be different if we were there longer, were based in a different neighborhood, or traveled during a different time of year. But we're scoring Montevideo based on what we actually experienced during our stay. If you're considering retiring abroad or living internationally for part of the year, this series is designed to help you evaluate destinations using a structured framework.
