Larry, The Downing Street Cat - Keir's Last stand

Tonight is Keir's last evening here, and I must say he's in unusually buoyant spirits. I suspect it has something to do with England seeing off France in the World Cup. Humans become terribly excitable when other humans successfully kick a ball about. At one point I heard him mutter, "That's six... blimey." For a fleeting moment I wondered whether he was counting the prime ministers I've outlasted. A perfectly reasonable assumption, if you ask me. Tomorrow, however, brings another changing of the guard. The famous red carpet has already been rolled into the hallway in readiness for Bambi Burnham's grand arrival. Humans do enjoy a ceremonial entrance. Cats generally prefer to wander in whenever it suits them. I've thoughtfully placed a little sign on the front door as a gentle reminder to Mr Burnham about who actually runs Number 10. One must establish these things early. It saves confusion later. His team has already issued a press release announcing that I shall continue living at No. 10 full-time. Very gracious of them. It's always reassuring when the staff formally acknowledges the permanent resident. So tomorrow, the furniture stays where it is, the mice remain optimistic for reasons I cannot fathom, and yet another Prime Minister discovers that Downing Street comes with a resident cat who neither seeks approval nor vacates the best chair. As ever, I'll keep you informed of all the gossip as it reaches my remarkably well-tuned ears.
