Top of the World... Then I accidentally rode Car Wreck Trail😳😱 | Laguna Beach MTB

Today's ride brings us back to one of Southern California's most iconic mountain biking destinations: Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park in beautiful Laguna Niguel and Laguna Beach. With miles of world-famous singletrack, challenging climbs, technical descents, ocean views, and year-round riding, it's no surprise this trail system has become a bucket-list destination for mountain bikers from around the world. Our goal today? Reach the legendary Top of the World! The ride begins at Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park before rolling down Aliso Canyon Road and connecting to Wood Canyon Trail. From there, the climbing begins in earnest as we tackle the steep grades of Cholla Trail before reaching West Ridge. Once on the ridge, it's nearly two more miles of climbing before finally arriving at the Top of the World, overlooking Laguna Beach and the Pacific Ocean. By the time we reached the summit, we'd already climbed roughly seven miles and over 1,200 feet of elevation. The views were absolutely worth every pedal stroke. The original game plan was simple: descend West Ridge and then cruise down Mathis Canyon back toward the valley. ...but mountain bike adventures don't always follow the plan. About halfway down Mathis Canyon, I spotted something that completely changed the day. Car Wreck Trail. A true Southern California classic—and a trail I'd never ridden before. Without overthinking it, I turned in. What followed was one of the most intimidating descents I've experienced in quite some time. Car Wreck is rated Double Black Diamond for good reason. It features extremely steep pitches, loose rock, deep braking bumps, tight turns, technical line choices, and enough exposure to keep your full attention from top to bottom. It demanded complete focus every second of the descent. Did I survive? Barely! Was it terrifying? Absolutely. Would I do it again? You'll have to watch to find out! After the adrenaline finally settled down, we wrapped up the ride with a stop at one of the area's coolest hidden historical landmarks—Dripping Cave. Long before mountain bikes rolled through these canyons, this massive rock shelter earned the nickname "Robbers Cave." During the late 1800s, outlaw gangs reportedly used the cave to hide stolen horses, cattle, and other loot while avoiding law enforcement throughout Orange County. Today it's one of the park's most unique destinations and the perfect place to cool off after an unforgettable ride. When it was all said and done, today's adventure covered 11.5 miles with just over 1,500 feet of elevation gain, delivering everything you could want in a mountain bike ride: sustained climbing, incredible ocean views, flowing singletrack, heart-pounding technical terrain, and a fascinating piece of California history.
