La democracia peruana frente a su prueba más crítica
#PoliticalTable 🔴📣As the June 7th election approaches, Peru is experiencing a crisis that transcends the current government. Various analysts warn that the country faces a crisis of regime and misrule that threatens social cohesion, the legitimacy of the State, and the validity of democratic institutions. Following the fall of former President Pedro Castillo in 2022, the political landscape has deteriorated to the point of establishing, according to these critical analyses, an authoritarian regime with a virtually nonexistent balance of power. ⭕The runoff election presents a crucial choice between the return of Fujimorism, represented by Keiko Fujimori and Fuerza Popular, and the option of democratic reconstruction led by Roberto Sánchez of Juntos por el Perú. For critics, the current Fujimori movement not only carries the legacy of corruption and human rights violations from the 1990s, but has also led, from Congress, an authoritarian parliamentarianism and a political pact that has weakened autonomous institutions, eroded democracy, and fostered impunity. ⏩Faced with the risk that a potential Fuerza Popular government would consolidate total control of the State, without real guarantees of democratic alternation, the proposal of a critical and vigilant vote in favor of Juntos por el Perú (Together for Peru) has emerged. This position acknowledges that a potential Roberto Sánchez government would face an extremely fragile scenario, with active de facto powers and a hostile Congress, but presents it as the only possibility to begin democratic reconstruction, halt pro-crime laws, stop setbacks in education reform, and review anti-forestry regulations promoted by the current parliamentary majority. 📍🎙In this context of social fracture, the debate on blank or spoiled ballots is also gaining momentum. While some sectors present it as a form of neutrality, democratic platforms warn that abstaining from voting does not resolve the crisis and could facilitate the rise of an authoritarian coalition. To analyze this political impasse and the possibilities for a democratic solution, we spoke on Mesa Política with Cecilia Israel, Nicolás Lynch, Rocío Pereyra, and Salomón Lerner Ghitis, members of Otra Mirada, who offer a critical perspective on the risks of Fujimorism, the need for democratic unity, and the challenges of coexistence in a country that demands a viable future.
