Shettima Ali Monguno, CFR (1926 – 2016) was a renowned Nigerian educationalist, administrator, and politician. Born in Monguno, Borno State, he was educated in Nigeria and at the University of Edinburgh. He began his public service as a Member of Parliament in 1959 and later held key national positions, including Minister for Air Force and Internal Affairs, Federal Commissioner for Trade and Industries, and Minister of Mines, Power, Petroleum, and Energy. On the global stage, he served as President of OPEC (1972–1973) and represented Nigeria at the United Nations for over a decade. A strong advocate for education, he also served as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Calabar and the University of Nigeria. He was conferred with the national honour of CFR in 1982.
