Surviving Off Sockeye | 103 Fish in 48 Hours on Alaska’s Copper River
We took a trip to a remote part of the Copper River for one more dip net trip to stock up on Sockeye for the winter months ahead. We camped two nights on the banks of the river, and Lena caught her first fish with a dip net! We are so incredibly thankful for the opportunity to harvest this meat for our family, and now comes the next job; processing the fish. We use every bit of each of these fish for the gift they are; roe is smoked (the most nutrient dense part of the fish), bodies boiled to be used for stock, hearts saved for frying up, bellies for jerky. We subsist off wild fish and game- meaning this isn't personal use, it is our main protein source and we are fishing to feed our family for the entire year. The smoker has been busy! We are still working on the fish wheel, tending the garden, sinking posts for a new cabin foundation, and have the firetruck to fix up- the last weeks of summer will keep us busy as the start, and we are happy to get to it!
