-30°F Camping & Fishing on a Creek That Never Freezes | Alaskan Winter
At thirty below, we set camp beside a small creek that never freezes. This same creek supplies our drinking water year-round, even in the depths of winter. Winter here can be cold and brutal, but it’s also one of the most peaceful times to be out. The quiet, the still air, and the long nights make for a kind of camping we truly enjoy. This trip was also a chance to test our tent and setup for future winter trips deeper into the backcountry. We spent the day fishing the open water and moving slow through the timber. A spruce hen came home with us and was cooked over the fire for dinner, alongside sourdough flatbread, smoked salmon + bacon. As the light faded and the cold settled in, we finished the night with homemade marshmallows by the fire. These are the days we’re grateful for simple food, clean water, warm hands, and time together — even when winter is at its hardest.
