On the night of December 19th, 1944, the 101st Airborne's only field hospital was overrun at a crossroads west of Bastogne. The tents were lit. The red crosses were spread across every roof. The machine guns kept firing for fifteen minutes anyway, and when it ended, the surgeons were gone and a division was about to be besieged with almost nothing left to treat its wounded.
