The first troops into the encircled Belgium city of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge is often stated as the 4th Armored Division, with the M4 Sherman Cobra King being photographed on the road from Assenois but this isn't strictly true. It was the men of the Pathfinders and the pilots and crews of the IX Troop Carrier Command who led the way in breaking into Bastogne and keeping the embattled 101st Airborne supplied with vital ammunition, food and medical supplies. C-47 crews and Glider Pilots all performed vital roles in ensuring the men of the 101st Airborne had enough to carry on the fight until they were finally reinforced by the 4th Armored Division. This is the full story of the missions flown into Bastogne by the men of the IX Troop Carrier Command.
