What Patton's Army Did When One Colonel Refused to Let Them Destroy a Cathedral
What Patton's Army Did When One Colonel Refused to Let Them Destroy a Cathedral. In August 1944, an eight-hundred-year-old cathedral was condemned to die. Not by the Germans holding the city, but by the Americans who came to liberate it. Standard procedure said the church steeple came down first, because that was where the snipers sat, and nobody in Patton's Army had a reason to question it. One colonel did. He had no authority to cancel anything, so he walked into a city held by three thousand Germans and climbed 290 steps to prove it. Would you have gone up those stairs, alone, on nothing but a hunch that every man around you was wrong? Or would you have let the guns fire? Tell us in the comments. And if someone in your family served with Patton's Army in France, we would be honored to hear about him. #Patton #PattonsArmy #WW2 #WorldWarII #ThirdArmy #WWIIHistory #Chartres #USArmy #WarStories #1944 This video is presented for historical and educational purposes under fair use.
