They Mocked His "Sherman" Jeep — Until He Blitzed 100 Miles Past German Lines

#ww2records #ww2history #wwii Why Major General Maurice Rose led from the very front of his armored columns—and why the 3rd Armored Division became one of the fastest spearheads in Europe. March 1945. As American forces drove into Germany, Rose refused to command the “Spearhead” division from a safe rear headquarters. He moved with the lead elements, saw roadblocks, enemy fire, traffic jams, and broken bridges with his own eyes, then made decisions before the battle could slow down. To cautious officers, it looked reckless. To Rose, speed was survival. Under his command, the 3rd Armored Division helped break the Siegfried Line, fought into Germany, captured Cologne, and pushed toward Paderborn in one of the most aggressive armored advances of the war. But leading from the front carried a price. On March 30, 1945, Rose encountered German armor near Paderborn and was killed in action.
