How the Most Powerful Ancient Warship Actually Worked

Try Opera for yourself here: https://opr.as/Opera-browser-deconstr... In this Deconstructed video, we explore how the ancient Greek trireme worked and why it dominated naval warfare across the Mediterranean for centuries. Working with Boris Rankov, Emeritus Professor of Ancient History at Royal Holloway, University of London, and using the full-scale reconstruction Olympias as a reference, we rebuilt the entire ship in 3D to reveal its design, construction, and operation in unprecedented detail. From its three superimposed tiers of oars and bronze ram to its sails, steering system, and crew of 200 men, we break down every major component of the vessel and explain how it achieved its remarkable speed, maneuverability, and combat effectiveness. We also explore how triremes were built, maintained, and employed in battle, including the tactics that made them one of history's most successful warships. We also created a detailed poster inspired by the video, illustrating the complete internal layout and key components of a 4th-century BC Athenian trireme. 👉 Get the poster here.
