The Union Square Hospitality Group is led by Danny Meyer and includes Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Blue Smoke, Jazz Standard, The Modern, Maialino, Untitled, North End Grill, Marta, Union Square Events, and Hospitality Quotient. Danny Meyer grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, in a family that enjoyed good food, cooking, celebrations, travel, and hospitality. His father's travel business allowed him to spend much of his childhood eating and traveling, which sowed the seeds of his passion for food and wine, as well as a successful career in hospitality. A 27-year-old Danny opened Union Square Cafe in 1985, pioneering a new breed of American eatery that combines fresh food and wine with caring hospitality, comfortable surroundings, and outstanding value. A historic landmark building, Gramercy Tavern, was opened by Danny in 1994. It offers refined American cuisine. Danny opened two more restaurants by the end of 1998, Eleven Madison Park and Tabla. Having served its customers for 12 years, Tabla closed its doors in December of 2010 and Eleven Madison Park was sold to its Chef and General Manager in 2011. USHG opened Blue Smoke and Jazz Standard in the spring of 2002, offering delicious real pit barbecue and world-class live jazz. Shake Shack, a modern-day roadside burger stand, was launched by USHG in the summer of 2004.
