French Nazi Spy Who Betrayed 60 Friends for “a Meal and a Man”
This documentary tells the extraordinary story of Mathilde Carré, one of the most controversial figures of the French Resistance during the Second World War. Remembered by the codename "La Chatte" ("The Cat"), Carré began the war as a committed resistance member before becoming one of the most damaging double agents in occupied France. Her actions helped reshape the fate of one of the Allies' most important intelligence networks and remain the subject of historical debate. Following the German invasion of France in 1940, Carré joined the Interallié intelligence network led by Polish officer Roman Czerniawski. Reporting to British intelligence in London, the network gathered vital military information from across occupied France. Intelligent, resourceful, and trusted by her colleagues, Carré quickly became one of its leading members before her arrest by German counterintelligence in late 1941. The documentary examines how her capture by the Abwehr transformed the course of her life. After agreeing to cooperate with the Germans, Carré provided information that enabled the dismantling of much of the Interallié network. She later became involved in a complex intelligence struggle involving the Abwehr, the British Special Operations Executive, and Allied counterintelligence, illustrating the difficult and often morally ambiguous world of wartime espionage. Drawing on wartime documents, intelligence records, trial proceedings, and personal memoirs, this history documentary explores the German occupation of France, the work of the French Resistance, and the difficult choices faced by individuals living under occupation. It also follows Carré's arrest after the liberation of France, her 1949 trial, years of imprisonment, and the lasting controversy surrounding her legacy. Was Mathilde Carré a committed collaborator, a survivor acting under extreme pressure, or something far more complicated? This documentary examines the evidence and allows viewers to reach their own conclusions.
