Watch a Beluga Whale Emerge from Abstract Alcohol Ink

I never know what animal I'm going to paint until the alcohol ink background is finished. Every painting begins as an abstract mix of color, texture, and movement. I let the background guide me, and eventually the animal reveals itself. In this video, that journey led to a graceful beluga whale gliding through soft blues and greens. I create my backgrounds with bottled alcohol ink, then use 99% isopropyl alcohol with Q-tips and paint brushes to lift and shape the image. Finally, I use alcohol ink markers to add the details that bring each animal to life.
