Episode 985 Val (Anne Reid) is exhausted after a sleepless night, still worried about Susan (Wendy Jane Walker). She stops Ken (Bill Roache) from calling Doctor Crawford (Neil Wilson) again, insisting she trusts his earlier assessment. Hilda (Jean Alexander) is hungover from the previous night, while Irma (Sandra Gough) scolds her mother for trying to marry her off to Dave (Reginald Marsh). Ena (Violet Carson) urges Val to call the doctor, but all she gets is an answerphone. Cyril (William Moore) is troubled by the fact he enjoyed beating up Lucas (David Webb). Len (Peter Adamson) gets a slap from Betty (Betty Driver) when he jokes about Cyril. Val finally reaches Doctor Crawford, who refuses to see Susan and accuses her of overreacting. Dave puts Hilda off marrying Irma, explaining that she and Stan would have to contribute £500 for the type of wedding he wants. Ena fears Susan may have appendicitis and urges Val to ring the doctor again. Crawford dismisses the concern but writes another prescription. Cyril resigns from the police force. When Susan worsens again, Ken calls in another doctor, Dr. Owen (John Keogh), who quickly diagnoses acute appendicitis. He immediately rushes Susan to hospital for emergency surgery.
