Episode 986 An anxious Ken (Bill Roache) and Val (Anne Reid) wait while Susan (Wendy Jane Walker) undergoes emergency surgery for appendicitis. A depressed Elsie (Pat Phoenix) returns to the street and gets drunk in the Rovers. Len (Peter Adamson) tells her she is becoming hard and bitter. Ken and Val are relieved when Susan’s surgery is a success and she’s out of danger. Sandra (Patricia Fuller), Irma (Sandra Gough), and Bet (Julie Goodyear) spend the day at Alderley Edge. Elsie refuses to join them and stays at No.11 drinking gin. Len (Peter Adamson) tries to get Elsie to come out with him but is angry when she rejects him once again. Once Elsie is alone, she is stunned when Alan Howard (Alan Browning) appears at No.11 having returned from London. He is shocked by the way Elsie has let herself go. When she accuses him of trying to pick up where he left off, he calls her a bitch and storms out.
