What Remains Of Strathaven Castle

Welcome to Strathaven Castle. Strathaven Castle can ben located in Strathaven, South Lanarkshire, Lanark, Scotland. Wee bit of History About Strathaven Castle:- Strathaven Castle was built in 1340s by Baird family. However after they stayed in the castle the castle was handed over to the Sinclair Family and after that the Murray family. In 1437 James Douglas Became the 1st Earl of Avondale and became the 7th Earl of Douglas. The castle was then handed over to James II and destroyed in 1455. But after that the castle got handed over to someone else, Andrew Stuart who rebuilt the castle in 1457. Stewart was the chancellor of Scotland for James III. In 1534 his son exchanged Strathaven for Ochiltree with Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, however he executed in 1540. Two years after his execution, his son rebuilt the castle by an act of parliament. In 1617 the castle was sold on to the Marquis of Hamilton. The last person to stay in the castle was Anne, Duches of Hamilton, but died in 1706. After the death of Anne, the castle became in ruins ever since. Strathaven Castle had another name, it was also called Avondale Castle.
