If You Have Blue Eyes — DNA Finally Revealed Where They Really Come From

Blue eyes do not contain blue pigment. Their appearance is mainly produced when the iris contains relatively little melanin, allowing light to scatter differently than it does in darker eyes. The strongest known genetic influence is a variant called rs12913832, located inside the HERC2 gene, which reduces the activity of the nearby OCA2 gene and lowers pigmentation in the iris. An influential DNA study found that blue-eyed individuals from different populations shared the same genetic pattern surrounding this region, suggesting that much of today’s blue-eye variation may trace back to a common founder mutation. However, eye color is more complex than a single-gene trait, and many additional genetic variants influence whether someone has blue, green, hazel or brown eyes. Ancient DNA has made the story even more surprising. The blue-eye-associated variant occurred at very high frequencies among some ancient European hunter-gatherer groups, while evidence from Chalcolithic populations in the Levant shows that it was not restricted to northern Europe. Scientists can reconstruct how the variant spread, but its exact first location remains uncertain.
