Puerto Ricans Were Told the Taíno Vanished - Their DNA Says Otherwise

Every textbook says the same thing: the Taíno were wiped out within a century of Columbus. Then a geneticist tested the island itself. In 2003 Juan Martínez-Cruzado of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, ran a randomized survey of around 800 Puerto Ricans — not volunteers who believed they had Native ancestry, but a cross-section of the island. About 61% carried Amerindian mitochondrial DNA, haplogroups A2 and C1: an unbroken chain of mothers reaching back before 1492. The Y chromosome tells the opposite story, and that gap is the whole history in one number. This is what actually happened between the encomienda of 1493 and the census of 1802 that recorded "none" — the paperwork, the casta system, the highlands where families kept living.
