HD Tonal Study Grand Canal

“Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet.” Bob Marley TONAL Study This week we start our work with a Tonal Study - focused on the scene of the Grand Canal in Venice. A tonal study gives us the opportunity to compose with a single color and make a path to a final painting. By exercising our subject with with a single color we can simplify the design and think more on the shapes and their relationship - also we can manipulate these tonal relationships and realize that we can create a completely different mood in the process. VALUE RELATIONSHIPS The relationship that lights and darks play in creating mood, atmosphere , light is so important. We can better understand this when we restrict ourselves to a single color or work in pencil or charcoal. In three exercises I will use essentially the same photo reference but very the tonal relationships to create three distinct moods..A great exercise for the artist and one I hope you will embrace during the next couple of weeks I will use one as the basis for developing a more colorful image
