The great basilica and opulent mansions that line the canal add to the visual feast. When you add the boats, the paline di casada or colored poles, and all those windows. It can be a scene that defeats the artist before even starting… Where do I start? SIMPLIFY This week we start our project with a tonal study - using of a very simple palette and a simple approach to the background. If you haven’t done one before it’s a painting using only a single color focused on the light and dark elements that you wish to use in your painting. I’ve elected to use strong darks through the boats as they move back-and-forth along the canal and flank the left side with an even stronger dark representing one of the mansions that lines In the photograph that we have of this grand canal there are some visual discrepancies. Because of the flat light everything assumes a very similar feel. This is something that the artist will look to improvise upon and in this weeks painting we do just that. Will exaggerate the light and dark contrast so that we achieve more recognizable image Stay out of trouble And communicate the light in a more effective manner
