This 437-Pound Silverback Gorilla Trusts His Keeper Completely

How do you safely care for a 437-pound (198 kg) silverback gorilla without relying on anesthesia? Through years of patience, trust, and positive reinforcement training. During our visit to Krefeld Zoo in Germany, gorilla keeper Ben invited us behind the scenes to film a rare voluntary training session with Kidogo, the zoo's magnificent 26-year-old silverback gorilla. Very few zoo visitors ever get the opportunity to witness this type of medical training, and we're incredibly grateful to share this experience with you. Every behavior you'll see in this video is completely voluntary. Kidogo chooses to participate as Ben guides him through more than 40 different behaviors that help veterinarians monitor his health. You'll see him calmly present his finger for a simulated blood draw, practice injections, allow examinations of his mouth, ears, hands, and feet, and even perform an incredible handstand to help prepare for future medical procedures. Training like this isn't about entertainment or teaching tricks. It's an essential part of modern zoo animal care. Silverback gorillas are especially vulnerable to heart disease as they age, and these voluntary behaviors allow veterinarians to perform routine health checks with far less stress and without the need for anesthesia whenever possible. One of the most remarkable parts of this session wasn't just what Kidogo did—it was how calmly he did it. Even while a neighboring chimpanzee repeatedly screamed for attention, Kidogo remained focused, patient, and completely engaged with Ben. Watching the trust and respect between keeper and gorilla was truly inspiring. A special thank you to Ben and everyone at Krefeld Zoo for generously sharing their time and allowing us to film this extraordinary behind-the-scenes experience. We learned so much about gorilla behavior, positive reinforcement training, and the incredible care that goes into protecting these intelligent great apes.
