Eine seltsam pervertierte Form von Voyeurismus: SAW IV | Review & Analyse

Although Jigsaw, the iconic villain from the SAW franchise, died in SAW 3, the films continue merrily. Just one year after the premiere of SAW 3, Lionsgate and the studio Twisted Pictures followed up with another sequel. Not only that, but the studio ordered three sequels at once. This job was so extensive that three new screenwriters worked on SAW 4: Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan, and Thomas Fenton. SAW 4 was the first sequel in which Leigh Whannell, the original SAW writer, only supported the film as a producer but no longer actively worked on the script. The three new writers were faced with the challenge of somehow connecting both Jigsaw's death and the countless loose ends from the SAW 3 finale. And in this review, I'll get to the bottom of how the first installment in the new trilogy delivers. 00:00 Start of the new trilogy 02:15 The grotesque autopsy 03:51 The mausoleum trap 06:24 Rigg's game begins 07:07 The hair trap 08:29 Cool transition shots 09:59 The hotel room trap 12:10 Jigsaw's past 14:30 The knife trap 15:11 The spear trap 17:08 Who is Jigsaw's new apprentice? 18:27 The plot twist 19:46 Deleted scenes 21:00 Conclusion and rating Rating and conclusion: Saw 4 mercilessly penetrates every nerve ending of its viewers. My head is spinning with barely distinguishable characters, plot twists, and contradictions within the story. Saw 4 rushes through its plot so fast that there's no time to question the completely unstable, forced plot with its countless logical gaps. I have no idea why everyone is where, but it doesn't matter, because it's all nicely concealed by a lot of blood and traps. And there's plenty of that: the film opens with an unnecessary, but technically extremely well-executed autopsy, in which we get a bit too deep an insight into John Kramer. The torture traps are bloodier than ever, but lack any convincing originality. Iconic games like the bear trap, the syringe pit, or the torture rack from Saw 3 are nowhere to be found here. And the characters are just as interchangeable as the traps. All the police officers in the Saw universe seem to be choleric, arrogant idiots. That wouldn't be so bad if at least their motives were credibly established. On the other hand, I think the typical Saw plot twist at the end is successful. I can well imagine that the average Saw viewer, who after years pulls SAW 4 out of the drawer, will be very confused by the plot twist fireworks that SAW 4 has unleashed here. Saw 4 has clever ideas, but continues the story of Jigsaw in such a bloated way that it becomes completely absurd. And speaking of Jigsaw: We learn a lot about his past. I liked everything about his torture workshop and how he caught his first victim, but the story of his wife and his lost son didn't convince me. It's the most generic motif imaginable and more hackneyed than Chupa Chups. The transitions in the film are really strong, and cinematographer David Armstrong delivers once again. For me, Saw 4 was an entertaining pleasure. Anyone who has studied SAW will absorb the hidden clues and little details the screenwriters have sprinkled in like a sponge. Anyone who's just a casual horror fan will find SAW 4 a mess, leaving them with a lot of questions and a bad mood. For me, it's smarter and more entertaining than SAW 3, so I give SAW 4 7.5 out of 10.
