SAW V: Ein ödes Puzzle bei dem auch noch Teile fehlen | Review & Analyse
The 2000s were the decade for the Saw franchise. Each sequel was more successful than the previous one. Even though Saw 4 and Saw 5 were panned by film critics, Jigsaw could always rely on one thing: a loyal fanbase. Since Saw 2, Saw 5 had a new director (David Hackl). Darren Lynn Bousmann had previously directed the film. Find out whether the change affected the quality of the film in my summary and review. 00:00 The Set Designer Directs 02:17 The Pendulum Trap 03:58 What does the title "SAW" mean? 05:29 Scott Peterson almost drowned 08:44 Logic holes galore 09:57 Searching for clues with Agent Mulder 10:56 Weak storytelling 11:41 The Fatal Five trap 13:03 The electrical circuit trap 14:10 Cheap look of the sets 15:16 Jigsaw's new apprentice 17:15 More logic holes 19:24 Saw blades from the hardware store 20:29 Plot twist of the Fatal Five 22:20 The finale with the glass coffin 24:31 Conclusion and rating Conclusion and rating of SAW V: We all knew this moment would come at some point, and with Saw V, we finally reached it: The air has gone out of the air. Saw V is inferior to its predecessors in absolutely every respect. There's the cat-and-mouse game between Detective Hoffman and Agent Strahm. This is absolutely generic and boring. The entire setup is doomed: a crime story is only exciting if the perpetrator's identity remains hidden until the big finale. How cool would it have been if it had been unclear until the end whether Agent Strahm or Detective Hoffman was Jigsaw's accomplice? Then there's the look of Saw 5: compared to its predecessors, the traps are uninspired and downright trivial. Even their visuals don't achieve the charm we've come to expect from Jigsaw's well-oiled gears. In general, the visuals and cinematography of Saw 5 are a bigger step backward than the period from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Saw V at times looks as cheaply produced as an RTL 2 telenovela. Saw 5 lacks a cinematic look. The setup of the five prisoners, on the other hand, is successful: the dynamic between them and the plot twist that they would have to work together was, in typical Saw style, unforeseen and exciting. The only annoying thing is: This plot line had absolutely no connection to the rest of the film and thus seemed forced and arbitrary. The only interesting thing about Saw 5 is the relationship and dynamic between Jigsaw and Detective Hoffman. Some gaps from the previous Saw films are surprisingly coherently filled in here. However, the interactions between these two characters feel lacking, and Hoffman's motivation to ally himself with Jigsaw wasn't entirely understandable to me. He has a desire for revenge, but that's about all we learn about his character. Hoffman will never be as iconic as John Kramer, but I like his taciturn, calculating, and merciless performance. But even there, more could have been done, and I might attribute Detective Hoffman's character traits to Costas Mandylor's apathetic acting. For me, Saw 5 is the weakest installment in the franchise so far and barely gets 5 out of 10.
