The body strives to maintain its temperature at a normal level, but this is already difficult in the heat, and this increases the risk of overheating and dehydration when we also exercise. High temperatures make us sweat even on a garden lounger, and during exercise, this effect is intensified, sometimes to an extreme, leading to increased fluid loss. This fluid loss is often underestimated and can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, and muscle cramps. Furthermore, heat puts a strain on the cardiovascular system, as the body tries to dissipate heat while simultaneously supplying the muscles with sufficient oxygen. This can lead to an increased heart rate and increase the strain on the heart during exercise. Here's how to do it right: Stay cool even on hot days Before exercising in high temperatures, proper preparation is crucial for safety and long-term health. First, check the weather forecast and choose suitable training times. Try to avoid the hottest hours in the middle of the day and instead exercise early in the morning or very late in the evening when temperatures are more pleasant. Another important aspect is choosing the right clothing and sun protection. Sunscreen with a high sun protection factor is always a good idea when exercising outdoors to protect your skin from sunburn and long-term damage. Drink enough water before your workout to maintain your fluid balance. During your workout, drink small amounts regularly to avoid dehydration. After training, it's important to replenish lost fluids by drinking plenty of water or sports drinks. Quick relief from overheating If you experience the first symptoms of overheating, immediately move into the shade. Cold compresses or a cold foot bath can further and quickly lower your body temperature. Pay particular attention to prevention and play it safe. In case of severe symptoms of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, you should call a doctor as soon as possible.
