The Rise and Fall of Disney Resorts
Other than the films, Disney is of course best known for its parks, but of course, the company has tried its hand at many other industries throughout its history. One of the most successful has been getting into the business of hotels and resorts, which started with the Polynesian and the Contemporary in 1971 with the opening of Walt Disney World. Since that point, Disney resorts expanded greatly under Eisner as ultra-themed experiences that embodied the Disney difference, with many of the Deluxe resorts even reaching a standard that I would consider architecturally significant. The resorts often have significant thematic depth and were great examples of the "Disney difference", so when I look at newer Disney resorts like the Riviera, the Gran Destino Tower or the new Island Tower, I have to wonder how anyone could find this decline to be acceptable. In this video, I cover the rise and fall of Disney resorts, specifically taking a lot of time to highlight the things that make them exceptional in the world of themed entertainment.
