Theme Parks and Entertainment Were Better in the 90s
In this era of cheap, modern minimalism and a themed industry that seems uninterested in quality, the 1990s look a lot better in retrospect. While any nostalgic retrospective is going to be biased towards certain aesthetic trends, events and products, often not reflecting the ubiquity of every day life, I think that we cannot deny the prevalence of themed entertainment during this era, which I would actually more broadly define as between 1985 and 2005, though obviously centered in the 90s itself. Everything seemed to be more colorful, exciting and larger-than-life, whether it was the rise of the McDonald's PlayPlace, the Coaster Wars, or the reformation of Times Square in New York City to become a major hub of consumerism and entertainment. Speaking of which, malls of this era are often portrayed as neon soaked centers of social and shopping culture, stores were often exciting or even themed and along side them was the rise of themed suburban experiences, ranging from Chuck E. Cheese Pizza, to Planet Hollywood, to the Rainforest Cafe. During this time, I don't think there was any place more ambitious or bombastic than the Las Vegas Strip, exploring themed entertainment with mega resorts and an incredible quantity of entertainment, including the lost themed park: MGM Grand Adventures. Notably, theme parks were incredibly high profile during this era too, with Paramount and Warner Brothers purchasing pre-existing parks, Universal expanding into Florida with flagship experiences like Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, and finally a push by Disney not just to be the best in the industry, but to become a cultural force outside of their films and parks. There's plenty more to talk about from this era too, so come join me in this look back to themed entertainment of the 1990s, exploring its aesthetics, projects and cultural push towards ultra-themed experiences.
