Grass is growing up the middle of the winding country lane, a thin green stripe where no tyre has been in a long while, and the hedgerows in flower are leaning in from both sides because nobody has bothered to cut them back. So you keep going. And the lane bends left under the chestnuts, and then you stop, because there's a honey stone cottage standing at the end of it in the last of the light and it is very obviously waiting for something. Not for you. It was waiting before you got here. Two chimneys. Four if you count the smaller ones, and you do count them, twice, because it seems suddenly important to know exactly how many chimneys. Golden hour is happening to the walls. The stone has gone the colour of the inside of a peach and it's holding the whole day's heat, and you can feel that from here, from where you're standing, which is not close. You stay where you are. Elderflower on both sides of you, big flat white heads of it, and the smell is halfway between honey and something faintly wrong. A bee goes past your ear at speed. It does not come back. Sunset birdsong is coming out of the hedgerow so thick it feels structural, like the sound is holding the lane up. Blackbird high in the chestnut. Robin closer. Something you can't name doing the same four notes over and over like it's trying to get them right. Nobody in the English countryside is listening to any of this except you. Then a soft wind arrives and the leaves turn over, silver side, and it's gone again. No pattern. It just does that. Later, and you don't notice exactly when, the birdsong starts to thin. One bird stops. Then more of them stop. Into the gaps comes a cricket, testing, and then another, and then the whole field behind the cottage is going, and that's the handover. Birdsong until the crickets take over, and nobody announces it, and it happens every evening of every summer whether anyone is standing in the lane or not. Tonight someone is. You should go. You're aware that you should go. But there's no music out here. That's the strange part. Standing in a Cotswold lane at the end of a summer evening and understanding for the first time that nothing is scoring your life for you. No strings underneath telling you this is beautiful. It just is, and you have to decide that on your own, and it turns out that you do. Your shoulders come down. You didn't ask them to. Ten hours of this. The lane doesn't go anywhere and neither do you. 10 hours of Cotswold cottage ambience. No music.
