The house is yellow. Warm yellow, the kind that has been touched up more than once, and the white columns hold up a roof that has been keeping rain off this porch for a hundred summers. The wicker chair is the good one. Warm through the back already. You sit. Below the seaside porch railing the tide is doing its slow work against the granite, and the ocean waves arrive in a rhythm you could set a watch by if you had any use for a watch today. Which you don't. There is a lantern on the little table and nobody has needed to light it in weeks. Birdsong from the pines over the roof. Constant. Some songbird up there has been at it since before you woke and shows no sign of stopping, and further out the gulls are working the water, and none of it is for your benefit. That's the part you keep coming back to. It would all be happening if you weren't here. Sea breeze comes across from the left and swings the hanging baskets, petunias, geraniums, and it smells like salt and warm cedar and something green. Hydrangeas below the steps, blue going a little green. Beach roses everywhere along the rocks, pink, unmanaged, slightly too many of them. Three sailboats out past the point, and you are not watching them, exactly. You just notice, later, that they've moved. You don't go anywhere. That's the whole thing. Hours do the thing hours do out here, which is stop announcing themselves. The light gets long. It gets gold. It comes in under the porch roof and lands on the boards near your feet and you watch it get there. And then the crickets start, low down in the grass, one and then a few and then the rest of them, and the birds thin out without ever quite finishing, and the coastal ambience just changes over, and nobody signs off on it. The chair is still warm. You are still in it. There is no music out here. There has never needed to be. Ten hours of coastal farmhouse ambience on a yellow seaside porch above the summer tide. Ocean waves, calming birdsong, gentle sea breeze, and subtle crickets after dark. No music. No talking. Nothing to do.
