Somehow that makes it easier to stay. It's golden hour and the meadow has caught fire with it, not real fire, the slow kind, every wildflower holding the light a little longer than it should. Only the sunset birdsong, high in the branches, one call and then an answer, the whole summer evening narrowing down to that small conversation you aren't part of. A country breeze comes up the road before you feel it. It moves the long grass first. Then your sleeves. Warm, the way only late day in the countryside gets warm, carrying hay and dust and something green you can't name. You stay still. You don't even shift your weight. There's a version of you that would already be checking a phone, and that version is not here right now, and you don't miss him. The soft crickets begin. You almost don't notice the moment they start, the way you never catch the exact second a room goes dark. One, then a few, then the whole field of them, steady under the birdsong, and the day lets go of you a fingertip at a time. This is the part you'll keep.
